History

A fellow member of the Indus Valley civilization more than 5,000 years ago, India has been the scene of empires such as the Maurya, Gupta, and Mughal. Its independence in 1947 marked the end of British rule and the beginning of a democratic republic.

Culture and festivals

Cultural richness is expressed in festivals such as Diwali (festival of lights), Holi (festival of colors), and Navratri. Yoga and meditation, which originated in India, attract millions of visitors every year.

Gastronomy

Indian cuisine is known for its use of spices: curry, cumin, turmeric, and garam masala. Dishes such as biryani, tandoori, and different types of paneer and dosas are not to be missed.
